Background

Newsweek has spent the better part of nine decades covering every aspect of health care, and we are committed to helping our readers make sense of the changes sweeping this industry.

As part of that commitment, we partnered with Statista Inc., a global market research and consumer data company, to develop a ground breaking ranking of the world's best hospitals. One thousand hospitals were initially selected in 2018 based on recommendations from medical professionals, patient survey results and medical performance indicators. For the recommendations, Statista collaborated with GeoBlue and invited tens of thousands of doctors, hospital managers and other healthcare professionals to an online survey.

The global board of medical experts was founded by Statista to support the World's Best Hospitals Project. The board is an independent body that is tasked with the continuous development of the quality and scope of the project.

Scores were calculated for each hospital in each of the four categories and weighted:

  • Peer recommendation from medical experts (doctors, hospitals managers, health care professionals) (40 percent national, 5 percent international)
  • Patient experience (16.25 percent)
  • Hospital quality metrics (35.25 percent)
  • Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) implementation (3.5 percent)

The hospitals on this list are at the forefront of adapting to these new challenges while providing top-notch patient care.

As the annual ranking of the World's Best Hospitals by Newsweek and Statista shows, consistency in excellence is the hallmark of these institutions, with familiar names dominating the list and top spots.

Among the hallmarks of great hospitals, however, are not just first-class care, first-class research and first-class innovation. The very best institutions also share another quality: consistency. The world's best hospitals consistently attract the best people and provide the best outcomes for patients as well as the most important new therapies and research. Of all the hospitals in the world, relatively few can do all those things year in and year out. The best belong to a very exclusive club.

To recognise them, Newsweek and global data firm Statista are proud to introduce our sixth annual listing of the World's Best Hospitals 2024. This year, the list includes data on 2,400 hospitals across 30 countries.
